How to choose a toilet seat
-
Before purchasing a toilet seat, it is important to consider the shape of the porcelain, the measurements, and the mounting system, among other things. Here we explain what to keep in mind before buying a toilet seat.
Choosing a toilet seat is a decision that requires careful thought, as it influences not only the bathroom’s aesthetics but also its functionality and comfort. Selecting a high-quality toilet seat ensures greater durability and adds comfort to your experience. At COMSAN, we offer our Versagrit® toilet seats, which, thanks to their unique and exclusive formula, are designed to last a lifetime, providing greater resistance and maintaining their color without alterations.
Below is a basic guide on how to choose a toilet seat that meets the specific needs of your space:
1. The Shape of the Porcelain Sanitaryware. There are different shapes available in the market, with the most common being:
- Round: The most classic shape, where the seat forms a semicircle starting from the back.
- D-shaped: Viewed from above, the seat resembles the shape of a “D.” The back is straight, the sides are parallel to the porcelain, and the front is rounded.
- Square: Likely the most modern in design. This shape features a somewhat rounded front but is generally longer than it is wide.

2. Porcelain Sanitaryware Measurements. The main measurements to take before purchasing a toilet seat are:
- The distance between the mounting holes of the hinge (center of hole to center of hole).
- The distance between the holes and the front edge of the bowl (from the center of the hole to the front edge).
- The width of the seating surface of the bowl (outer edge to outer edge).
You can use a piece of cardboard to trace the shape of the current seat and use it as a template for easier measurement verification.
3. Fixing Mounting Positions. There are two mounting options for attaching the seat to the porcelain:
- From above.
- From below.

4. Material. The market offers various materials, each associated with the quality and durability of the seat:
- PVC: A very lightweight material but tends to yellow quickly.
- Duroplast: The market standard, known for its resistance to wear.
- MDF: A compact and sturdy material, warm to the touch.
- Wood: A heavier material that requires robust hinges to support its weight. Usually available in colors like walnut, pine, cherry, or wenge.
- Versagrit®: is a unique material created using an original and exclusive proprietary formulation, composed of 60% natural-origin materials. Among its standout features, it is recognized for its long-lasting durability and resistance. It does not yellow or experience color alterations, includes an antibacterial treatment, and features smooth lines that minimize the accumulation of dirt and bacteria.
- Standard or free-fall closure: A traditional manual closure system where the seat drops freely onto the porcelain.
- Soft-close or dampened closure: An automatic closure system that prevents loud noises and impacts on the porcelain. This option allows for a smooth, slow, and controlled closing process.
Additionally, modern hinges may allow for easy removal of the seat from the porcelain by pressing a button or detaching it with a single upward motion, without the need for tools. This feature facilitates better and easier toilet cleaning.
At COMSAN, we offer the patented CID® system, a gear and damper mounting system with minimal components and a clean aesthetic. This system allows the toilet seat and lid to be easily mounted and removed without the need for tools.
